Baptism

In preparation for the baptism:

Please bring required documents, if applicable, as follows:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. If you live outside Holy Rosary Parish, a letter of permission is required from the Pastor of your home parish. The Diocesan policy is that wherever you have lived for the last 6 months is your home parish.
  3. If the Godparents live outside the parish, the priest may require them to obtain a Sponsor's Certificate from their home parish.

Select a Godparent. At least one Catholic Godparent is required. If you have two Godparents, there should be a man and a woman.

  1. A Godparent must be a Catholic who is in good standing with the Church, practices the faith, and has been baptized, received First Communion, and Confirmation. If married, he/she should be married in the Church.
  2. A person from another faith/religion may not serve as a Godparent. However, when there are two Godparents (one of them Catholic), a person from another Christian faith/religion may serve as a Christian Witness to the baptism.

We ask you to keep these few criteria in mind when choosing a Godparent so as to avoid ill-feelings among family and friends.

  1. Please attend the Pre-Baptismal Instruction which is held on a regular basis. Dates of Instruction are listed below. The Instruction begins at 8 P.M. in Holy Rosary Church, 120 Jerome Avenue. Please, arrive at 7:45 P.M. so that the Instruction can begin on time.
Both Parents and Godparents are required to attend the meeting. If you are outside the parish, it may be to your convenience to attend this instruction in your home parish. If so, a letter should be obtained from your home parish stating that you have attended these instructions.
  2. For your convenience we provide an envelope for your baptism donation to the Church.
  3. The Sacrament of Baptism is generally celebrated each Sunday at 2:00 P.M. and during Mass on the third Sunday of each month. No Baptisms are scheduled during the season of Lent. Dates of Baptisms are listed below.
  4. Each year we celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for the newly Baptized children and their families. This takes place in the spring and the date is published in our bulletin.
  5. We also celebrate a Mass for God's Little People of pre-school age in the fall of each year. The date is published in our bulletin.

PREPARATION FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

All couples must attend a marriage preparation program given at Holy Rosary or by the Archdiocese of New York. It is suggested the course be finished at least two months before your marriage. The schedule for the one day program at Holy Rosary is as follows:

  • March 8th, 2008
  • August 2nd, 2008
  • October 18th, 2008
  • March 7th, 2009
  • August 1st, 2009
  • October 17th, 2009

Couples must complete the pre-marriage investigation questionnaire. This will be done with the parish priest or deacon after you have attended the marriage preparation course. Please note that checks payable to Holy Rosary marriage Preparation due at time of registration is $75.00.  This will include refreshments, lunch, handbook for Catholic marriage.  Remember to register at least two weeks prior to the date of Marriage Preparation.

DOCUMENTS NEEDED

  • A special Baptismal Certificate issued for the purpose of marriage and dated no earlier than six months before the marriage.
  • Dates and place of Communion and Confirmation.
  • If you are not parishioners of Holy Rosary, the bride will need a letter of permission and a letter of freedom to marry from her home parish. The groom will need a letter of freedom from his parish. The parish in which you have been living the past six months is your parish.
  • The pre-marriage course certificate stating that you have completed the classes.
  • A marriage license from the City of New York (the marriage license is valid for 60 days).
  • In a case where there has been a previous marriage, or when marrying a non-Catholic, other documents are required which will be discussed with you by your priest or deacon.

PLEASE KNOW THAT CERTAIN DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED TO US BECOME PART OF YOUR PERMANENT MARRIAGE RECORD AT THE PARISH OFFICE.

APPOINTMENTS YOU NEED TO SCHEDULE

  1. The post "marriage course" appointment. The priest or deacon will discuss questions that may have arisen out of the course. The pre- marriage questionnaire will be handled at this time. All documents you have obtained should be brought in at this time.
  2. The one-month-away-meeting. At this meeting the liturgy will be discussed so be prepared to discuss your selection of readings and any special considerations you may want at your ceremony. Please bring your marriage license and the offering for the church to this meeting.

PLEASE KNOW THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SET UP ALL APPOINTMENTS AND HAVE ALL PAPER WORK IN A MONTH BEFORE.

  • REHEARSALS are scheduled on Thursday or Friday. Please contact our Parish Wedding Coordinator  Mrs. Fran LoCasto at (718) 987-8641 at least one month before your wedding to schedule your rehearsal.
  • MUSIC - All plans for music will be made by our Parish Director of Music, Jonathan Fields. If you would like special selections, please contact him at (718) 727-3360 by leaving him a mesage.
  • FLOWERS - Please discuss flowers with your priest or deacon. Remind your florist that the church opens 1/2 hour prior to the time of your wedding. We cannot be held responsible for flowers left outdoors. After your wedding it is customary to leave the flowers to beautify the altar.
  • PHOTOGRAPHS - Please inform your photographer to speak with the priest before the ceremony to discuss any church particulars.
PLEASE TALK TO THE PRIEST IF YOU PLAN TO TAKE PICTURES AFTER THE WEDDING.

WE ASK YOUR COOPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING IN THE FOLLOWING MATTERS:

In order to avoid tripping or falling, runners are not permitted in church. Also rice, confetti, bird seed, balloons etc. are not permittedinside the church.

OFFERINGS - The word tithing is mentioned over 40 times in the Bible. As a sign of gratitude to God for His goodness, people would set the first 10% of their produce for God. As a sign of your gratitude to God for the love you share with each other, you may consider giving 5% of what you will spend on your wedding day to God's Church and 5% to Holy Rosary to help us continue to serve the people of this community. For those who choose not to do so for the year 2008, the offering for the church is $700 including a refundable $50 late fee. Late fee of $50 will be given back to you if your wedding ceremony begins on time. The offering for the church includes the fee for the musicians, wedding coordinator, and sacristian who sets up and cleans. It should be paid at the one month away meeting. A personal offering should also be made to the altar servers on the day of the wedding. There may be an increase in the offering for the weddings taking place in subsequent years.

The offering to Holy Rosary for a couple in which neither party resides within our parish boundaries is $750.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY - The Wedding Anniversary of Newly Married Couples is celebrated at Holy Rosary in the FALL with a Mass and refreshments. Contact the rectory in September for details.
